Wisconsin Wellness Secret- Whitetail Deer Hunting for Food, Fun and Fitness

Wellness opportunities in Wisconsin are abundant.

Autumn brings cooler temperatures, brilliant foliage coloration, and the annual Whitetail Deer harvest, a Wisconsin tradition since the earliest days of statehood. Gone are the days of remote deer camps occupied by inebriated, careless and filthy hunters who stumbled through the woods after late night card games played under the light of kerosene lamps dimmed by cigar smoke.

Today it’s a healthy pursuit;  a challenge,  met by safety conscious hunters of both genders with an ethical goal of humanely controlling the deer population, filling the freezer, enjoying the outdoors, and embracing the group dynamics of teaming up with family and friends. I’ve enjoyed the sport for 35 years and know that modern deer hunters are environmentally conscious and appreciative of these gifts.

The meat is truly quality. Deer meat, called venison, is organic and totes high protein, low fat, essential oils and minerals that are lacking in the conventional supermarket meat processed from animals that are often raised never seeing the natural light of day. Healthy succulent steaks for grilling are obtained from plump deer tenderloins. Tasty roasts in slow-cookers with vegetables like potatoes, onions, celery and carrots will cause hunger pangs with a lift of the lid. And don’t forget the wonderful, lean ground venison as a wise choice for chili and spaghetti. My mouth is watering right now; how about you?

The hunt can be a fitness lover’s dream. It usually involves much walking and carrying of a heavy firearm, often while swathed in heavy clothing and big boots. The terrain can be taxing due to Wisconsin’s beautiful but frequently hilly landscape. It all adds up to a thorough fitness workout, and I have not even mentioned the additional muscles used if a deer is harvested – it must be dragged out!

Wisconsin is known as one of the top states for Whitetails. The deer population has lately been at record or near record levels since counting began nearly a century ago. And the safety record of hunting is also at an all time high, thanks to new hunter-safety certification requirements for licensing.

Often the hunt is pursued as a group, each sharing stories from past outings that can bring either laughter or sadness about the big one that got away. In just a few weeks you’ll see our state’s countryside dotted with blaze-orange coated and capped hunters, some with dreams of a trophy buck or a hearty meal, some just seeking the solitude of the forest, but all gaining memories that will last a lifetime.
